Description
On the eve of Sarah Whitefield's seventy-fifth birthday, memories take her back to New York in the 1930s, when her marriage to a childhood friend end after just one year. Sarah is shattered and ashamed. Sarah's parents convince her to join them on a trip abroad. One afternoon at a lunchon, she meets William, Duke of Whitfield. He sparks her intellectual curiosity-and makes her laugh. Even in the shadow of the Windsor scandal, William is willing to give up his remote right to the throne to make Sarah his dutchess and his wife. On their honeymoon in the beautiful French countryside, the newly-weds stumble upon thwir dream house, a crumbling but beautiful historic chateau, which they begin to renovate. In the midst of their plans, the Nazis move closer and William must join the allied forces. Sarah is left to raise her son alone and bear another child alone. Even during the terror of the Occupation, as her beloved home is taken over by the Germans, Sarah's spirit carries her through. When William is shot down over Germany, Sarah refuses to believe even the possibility of his death. When Sarah learns that William has been found, she nurses him back to health. William and Sarah begin to buy family jewels from war survivors trying to rebuild their lives. Their collection is the basis for the House of Whitefield ans soon they become jewelers to the crowned heads of Europe. Together they produce a family of their own: Phillip, the proud eldest son; Julian, the charming and generous middle child; Isabella, the rebellious daughter; and Xavier, the final
